Image: The Lamar Dodd School of Art and the Institute for Women’s Studies at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Art History and Women Studies to begin in August 2023. The History of Art Area of the School of Art and the Institute of Women Studies are committed to a globalized curriculum in art history and the humanities to complement and promote current areas of strength within the School of Art and across the Franklin College. We seek a scholar of Atlantic visual culture who engages intersectional and feminist approaches to the cross-cultural points of exchange between Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean in the Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century. Candidates should have a particular focus in one or more of these geographical regions while addressing more broadly foundational notions of modernity and modernization in the Atlantic world of The Enlightenment, Colonialism, and the Age of Revolution, such as the visual cultures of gender, indigenism, slavery, and diaspora. The position will be housed in Art History, with a joint-appointment to the faculty of the School of Art (75%) and the Institute for Women’s Studies (25%). A PhD in Art History or Visual Studies is required, and two years teaching experience beyond graduate school is preferred. Successful candidates will have a proven record of active research and an emerging or established reputation within Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Trans-Atlantic Visual Cultures with a research interest in issues of identity, sexuality, and gender. In addition to an active research agenda, the position carries a teaching load of 4 courses per year at the graduate and undergraduate level. Mentorship and advising of both graduate and undergraduate students is expected, as well as participation in graduate committees. We are keen to support a collaborative community in which faculty may co-host visiting artists and scholars, develop new cross-listed curricula, and participate in initiatives across the School of Art and the Institute of Women’s Studies.
