Dear Colleague: We invite you to be a part of the women’s studies community at UGA by applying to become an Affiliate Member of the Institute for Women’s Studies. IWS is situated in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, but we house an interdisciplinary program that includes nearly every college in the university. Our core faculty currently consists of nine members, and our affiliate faculty includes over 100 members from at least 35 departments across the campus. We have approximately 150 undergraduate Women’s Studies majors and minors, and 40 graduate certificate students. Because of the unique history and interdisciplinary nature of IWS degree programs, we rely on affiliate faculty to meet our curricular needs. Affiliate faculty play a key role in educating Women’s Studies students by teaching courses (in their own departments) that have been approved for Women’s Studies credit, by teaching core WMST courses, by directing independent readings, and by mentoring students with particular interests in their areas of specialization. Our affiliates report that their teaching experiences are greatly enriched by the excellent Women’s Studies students that are drawn to their courses. We can provide various resources on feminist pedagogy and research for all UGA students and faculty. While many Affiliates contribute to Women's Studies through teaching and mentoring, others are involved because their research involves women, gender, or related topics, or because they want to offer their expertise on a particular committee. Affiliates are invited to serve on various IWS committees, and they can help shape IWS policies and programs through their elected representatives on our Steering Committee. Affiliates also participate in our popular Friday Speaker Series and research colloquia. The Institute for Women’s Studies provides our Affiliates with support at various junctures in their careers, including mentoring, help through the review, promotion, and tenure process, faculty award nominations, and local, regional, and national networking. We facilitate research collaborations through reading and research groups, colloquia and conferences, and by providing a space for feminist and other critical scholarly dialogue. If you are interested in joining us, please submit an Affiliate application, (CLICK HERE to download pdf application) along with an updated CV. We welcome your involvement and invite you to share in the exciting and rewarding days ahead. Sincerely, Patricia Richards Director, Institute for Women's Studies **For questions, please contact Dr. Richards at plr333@uga.edu and Carla York at carlayork@uga.edu.
