Image: The University of Georgia (UGA) Department of History and Institute for Women’s Studies invite applications for the position of tenure-track assistant professor of African American women’s history. We seek a specialist in African American women’s history, with a preference for candidates whose research focuses primarily on any period prior to 1945. Candidates with specific research and teaching interests in the history of science, health, reproduction, sexuality, environment, labor, or slavery are especially encouraged to apply. This is a joint appointment between the two units on campus; the tenure home will be in History. Anticipated start date is August 1, 2023. Applicants must have their PhD in History, Women’s and Gender Studies, African American Studies, or a related field conferred by July 30, 2023. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research agenda in African American women’s history. Competitive applicants will demonstrate evidence of training, expertise, and commitment to women’s and gender studies. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to their specializations and the curricular needs of both units, including but not limited to U.S. women’s history. The standard teaching load is four courses per year (two in each unit). The successful candidate also will participate in activities related to the academic mission of both units and the university, including service on committees, student advising, and recruitment. Administratively a program in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, IWS cooperates with departments of all schools and colleges at UGA in developing its curriculum and programming. IWS offers an undergraduate major, minor, and LGBTQ certificate as well as a graduate certificate.
